Caring for Dulwich trees
14 March 2025Some of you have been asking about the work of our contractors AFA Consulting who are often out around the Estate, undertaking what looks like drilling and hammering trees.
AFA are arboriculturists carrying out advanced decay detection with specialist equipment, on the Estate’s tree stock. They assess the vitality and internal structure of some of the Estate’s older trees.
One of the methods used is sonic tomography, which is a non-invasive test that uses sound waves to calculate shape and extent of internal decay. It maps the inside of the tree on a 2D horizontal plane, providing a visual representation of what is going on inside including cavities, decay and dysfunction as well as solid wood.
The Estate looks after thousands of trees, with the results of these advanced decay detection tests enabling informed decision making around retention and removal of trees.
